We recently had the privilege to partner with the incredible non-profit, Adaptive Adventures; a Colorado based organization that provides progressive outdoor sports opportunities to improve quality of life for children, adults and veterans with physical disabilities and their families. They were kind enough to let us be a part of their organization by donating close to 1000 pairs of goggles to be used by their athletes and volunteers for various activities. While we’re sure they will be the most popular among the sit-skiers in the winter, last weekend some hand-cyclers decided to take the new goggles out for a spin.

Melissa Hobkirk, Community Outreach Supervisor for Adaptive Adventures, let us know just how stoked they were: “Here is a photo of a group who decided to wear the ZEAL goggles during our Saturday Cruiser Ride Kick-Off in Washington Park, Denver. We gave goggles to our volunteers, clients, and siblings of clients: our entire Saturday Cruise Crew. THEY. LOVED. THEM. They can’t wait to be on the slopes to rock their ZEALs next winter!”

Last weekend our very own Jenny Arnett checked a half marathon off her bucket list when she completed the 13.1 miles of the Kentucky Derby Mini-Marathon in Louisville. Being one of the many people that embark on this journey having only run a consecutive 3-miles previously, Jenny gives us some insight on her training and diet leading up to the race:

It all started last fall, when I was determined to finally get back into shape. I started kickboxing and quickly came down with the work out bug. My sister-in-law and I realized that this could be the time to cross something off of our bucket list: the half-marathon.

Training started in January, and I quickly discovered I hated running in cold weather. This made training in the dead of winter, in Illinois, insanely difficult. My diet changed from just casually watching what I eat, to making sure I get the right amount of protein and carbs during the day. The training schedule consisted of three shorter runs (anywhere from 3 to 6 miles) during the week and one longer run on the weekend (6 to 10 miles). I know this may sound easy to serious runners, but before this I had never ran more than 3 miles at one time! Not to mention the fact that I was still working full time, playing tennis, and keeping a social life! It took a lot of time management and determination (and playlists) to get where I needed to be by the end of April. I took full advantage of the support I got from friends and family and, of course, simple motivational quotes a la Pinterest.

Everything became so much easier when I could run outside, and I could rely on my sunglasses to hold up to the challenge. I got the Eos glasses about halfway through my training and was hooked. I absolutely love the way they fit, they’re super lightweight, they don’t move on my face, and they block out the sun perfectly in any lighting! We completed the race, both rocking our ZEAL Eos sunglasses. I feel like a true runner now – it’s time to start training for my next race – The Color Run!

Yesterday we announced that pro-skier Caroline Gleich had been added to the ZEAL team and today we sat down with her to ask her some questions. Keep reading to find out who the girl behind the American flag pants and white Penny Lanes is and why she is so stoked to be on the ZEAL team!

I’m so excited to join ZEAL because they understand that technical performance and aesthetics go hand in hand. There shouldn’t be a compromise between form and function. It’s about time someone put the glamor back into outdoor sports! Style, design and sports are all hugely important to me- design especially because it influences the way we feel and how we interact with the world around us.

The people who live this lifestyle make no distinction between their “outdoor” technical clothing and accessories and their regular day to day clothing. In my active lifestyle, there’s no room for products that don’t perform. ZEAL is committed to people like me.

I once heard someone say, “There are two types of skiers: those who care how they look and those who pretend they don’t.” Skiing is about style and fun! ZEAL has that same energy and I’m definitely so stoked to be a part of the team!

Where are you from?
Originally from Minnesota, I moved to Utah a long time ago so that’s where I’m from now. But I’m truly a California girl at heart!

Favorite song, what do you have on repeat right now?
Bad Girls by MIA. You have to check out the video too! It’s insane.

How did you get your start?
I actually grew up playing ice hockey in Minnesota because the local ski hill was too far away (my parents wouldn’t drive me the hour and a half). It was the closest sport to skiing that I could do on a regular basis. This formed a strong athletic foundation for my future profession. Ever since I was a little kid, I had this dream of becoming a pro skier. When I moved to Utah, I just started skiing all the time and telling everyone I met about my passion and dream. I did a few competitions, but I found that I loved skiing powder the most. Soon enough, I got my first ski sponsor, Atomic, and started shooting with the best photographers and filmers in Utah. I slowly picked up more sponsors, got my picture in the mags and it’s been an unbelievable roller coaster ride since then!

Who is your biggest influence or inspiration?
I’m inspired by the photographers and cinematographers I shoot with. Shooting ski photos is an artistic, athletic pursuit and I enjoy the creative collaboration it takes to get the shot. I find inspiration in the natural environment, the plants, trees and rocks. Also, in the city, the people, plants – everything around me. I’m like a big sponge, taking it all in.

What do you love to do besides skiing?
Road trips, yoga, stand up paddling, cooking, gardening, surfing, painting, drawing, sewing, crocheting, making collages, going to thrift stores to find vintage t-shirts and clothing, taking photos, cruising on my skateboard, playing badminton!

Favorite adventure/trip?
A ski/surf road trip to Mt. Hood. Late spring, we climbed Mt. Hood and skied off the summit. The next day, we surfed and camped on the beach in Florence, OR. It was one of those trips where everything just worked out perfectly. And I love road trips because you can bring all your toys, like skis and surfboards, without having to pay extra baggage fees.

Most embarrassing moment of your life?
One of my favorite ski tricks is a spread eagle (see photo). One time, I was wearing some not so stretchy Gore-Tex ski pants and I did a spread eagle so big that I ripped the crotch of my ski pants.

Proudest moment?
Either graduating from the University of Utah magna cum laude with a degree in anthropology or seeing myself on a 40’ tall big screen during Warren Miller tour. Both were big dreams come true.

Favorite pair of ZEALs?
Definitely the Penny Lane in white! I rock those everywhere. They are so versatile, they can either be ice princess/ski mountaineer or beach babe! On the snow, I love the Voyageur goggles (coming soon!).

What’s the top reason that you love ZEAL?
As a professional skier, I am deeply connected to the natural environment. I like to support businesses that come up with new ideas to minimize their environmental impact. It makes me feel good to know that all ZEAL sunglasses are made from Z-Resin, a planted based plastic that comes from castor bean oil instead of crude oil.

I often describe our generation as the “clean up generation.” The biggest issues we are going to have to deal with are related to the environment – land and water use and climate change. There are no perfect solutions, but every little bit helps!
