Meet 5 Gyres

The 5 Gyres Institute, founded for a planet free of plastic pollution, is a non-profit organization dedicated to researching the issue of plastics in the world’s oceans, and engaging communities in systemic change, a mission near and dear to ZEAL Optics' heart and mission.

In 2011, 5 Gyres completed the first global survey of plastic marine pollution, finding plastic evidence across all five subtropical gyres, oceanic current systems where plastic waste accumulates. The organization engages corporate partners, policymakers, and the general public to reduce plastic pollution by improving product design, recovery systems, and individual responsibility.

Ninety percent of what you see in the middle of the ocean — bottle caps, straws, broken down packaging— you can solve your own contribution to the problem by using reusables and avoiding bad packaging. Each American uses an average of 326 pounds of plastic per year. Half of that is single-use. - 5 Gyres Associate Director Stiv Wilson

5 Gyres engages people in design and policy solutions to end the global health crisis of plastic pollution. 5 Gyres is a science to solutions organization, explains Stiv. Yes, we do scientific research in the oceans, rivers, and lakes, but we don’t stop there. We use this data to create measurable change.
